FAITH ABUSE: WHEN GOD BECOMES A CAMPAIGN PLOY
By Arianna Huffington

This is my last column before Election Day. With less than a week to go, I plan on doing everything in my power to defeat George W. Bush (need a ride to the polls?). Then I'm going to get down on my knees and pray to a higher power.

As someone for whom faith is incredibly important, and who regularly prays for all the people and things that matter to me, I'm hopeful that God is as appalled as I am with the way His name is constantly being taken in vain on the Bush campaign trail, and with how the president is abusing his faith to justify to himself and to the world his disastrous policies.

Lord knows there's a very long list of things to be angry with Bush about, but this one has moved to the top of my personal hit parade because, as Catholic theologians teach us, "The corruption of the best is the worst." And George W. is truly corrupting faith and dragging it into the political gutter. In two fundamental ways:

First, he's using it as a spiritual inoculation against uncertainty and complexity.

Ron Suskind's recent piece in the New York Times Magazine painted a chilling portrait of a presidency in which thoughtful analysis and moral questioning have been replaced by "God-given" certainty, and where facts and open debate have become an anathema.

Suskind reveals a president who uses his faith to numb himself against reality. It anesthetizes him in the same way a stiff drink—OK, 20 stiff drinks—used to, and allows him to drown out the voices of doubt. Yet great thinkers throughout history have extolled the virtues of doubt. As Paul Tillich put it: "Doubt isn't the opposite of faith; it is an element of faith."

But not in the Bush White House, where doubters are treated as traitors, and inconvenient facts are the work of the Devil because facts can lead to questioning, and questioning undermines faith. And that would be blasphemy in an Oval Office where unbending resolve has become a holy sacrament. No wonder Bush is unwilling to admit to even a single mistake.

The second way the president is corrupting his faith is by using it as a marketing tool designed to garner support among the over 60 million Americans who identify themselves as evangelical—particularly the 4 million born-again voters who stayed home in 2000.

Nowhere is this blending of church and campaign more evident than in "George W. Bush: Faith in the White House," a DVD being distributed to tens of thousands of America's churches.

Although not officially the work of the Bush-Cheney campaign, it obviously has its approval, and indeed was screened at a party for Christian conservatives hosted by the campaign at the GOP convention in New York.

In the documentary, President Bush is presented as a man with "the moral clarity of an old-fashioned biblical prophet"—and is shown sharing a beatific split screen with the Son of God himself.

So, in 2004, Jesus is not only the president's favorite philosopher—he's his surrogate running mate. I'm surprised we haven't seen any "Bush-Christ 2004" bumper stickers yet. It would make for a heck of an October surprise.

All this pious posturing is also being used as a cudgel with which to attack John Kerry, portraying him as a sorry second in the faith sweepstakes.

Forget that Kerry carries a Bible and a rosary with him on the campaign trail, used to be an altar boy, and has said, "My faith affects everything that I do." The Bushies have made it seem as if they are running against Joe Pagan. Just check out the "Kerry: Wrong for Catholics" page on the official Bush-Cheney campaign Web site.

What's next? Attack ads from Altar Boys for Truth claiming Kerry never actually swallowed the body of Christ during communion?

What the president calls faith is actually nothing of the sort. It is fanaticism, pure and simple. The defining trait of the fanatic is an utter refusal to allow anything as piddling as evidence to get in the way of an unshakable belief.

This zealot's mindset is what allows President Bush to take in the death and destruction in Iraq and see them as "freedom on the march." And it's also what allows Abu Zarqawi and his followers to coldly put a bullet in the back of the head of four-dozen unarmed Iraqi Army recruits because they are "apostates."

"Either you're with us or you're against us" plainly cuts both ways.

"This is why George W. Bush is so clear-eyed about al-Qaida and the Islamic fundamentalist enemy," explained Bruce Bartlett, a domestic policy advisor to Reagan and Bush 41. "He understands them because he's just like them."

I pray that every American of real faith keeps this in mind when stepping into the voting booth on Election Day.

Weapons Where in Iraq After Invasion!

A report from 5 Eyewitness News in Minneapolis reported that the explosives which disappeared from a storage facility in Iraq had been found by US troops after the invasion in 2003. The piece draws a fine line between John Kerry and George Bush, not on politics, but on religion and outlines the effect the President's faith has on his decisions. One example is stem cell research, an issue Catholic and protestant churches have taken up as a religious issue. President Bush put harsh restrictions on stem cell research, claiming his decision as one of moral and religious ethic, however, Senator Kerry, a Catholic, has promised to do the opposite, allow such research. My advice to the president is simple, stop picking on the alleged flip-flops of John Kerry! You yourself have changed positions on things like the Homeland Security Department and the 9/11 commission, so quit being hypocritical. Plus, if you look back at the day you lobbied for support to take action in Iraq, maybe you'll remember what a reporter asked you: "Mr. President, how important is it that that resolution give you an authorization of the use of force?" To which you replied, "It's a chance for the Senate to say, we support the administration's ability to keep the peace. That's what this is all about." So, if you go around saying that John Kerry voted for the war, you'd be stretching the truth (that would be nothing new for the Bush White House) because Senator Kerry voted for action, not a war, you said it yourself. So stop running the whole flip-flop crap into the ground because we all know that you're just afraid of your own, horrible record of lies, lies and even more lies!

Bush Propaganda!

The AP reported today that the Sinclair Broadcast Group, the same company that banned "Nightline" for running the names of our fallen troops, will be running an anti-Kerry movie on the eve of the election. In fact, Kerry's plan would leave 97% with the insurance they have now but twenty-seven million Americans without coverage would receive government assistance.
>Tonight, the president said, “The truth of the matter is if you listen carefully, Saddam would still be in power if he [John Kerry] were the President of the United States and the world would be better off.” Actually, not only does Senator Kerry want Saddam Hussein in prison, he has been on the record as saying “There's no doubt Iraqis are living better lives with Saddam Hussein behind bars," and, "We've seen the mass graves, heard from the victims of Saddam's reign of terror, and know too well what Saddam (and his sons) Uday, and Qusay did to their political opponents. Whether it was the denial of freedom decade after decade, or the way in which Saddam Hussein built himself ornate palaces while his people suffered in absolute poverty, this was a brutal dictator whose iron fist made life horrifically worse for the Iraqi people.” To sum it all up, LIES, LIES, LIES from President Bush tonight!
>Let's not forget what Bush said about Dredd Scott: "Another example would be the Dred Scott case, which is where judges years ago said that the constitution allowed slavery because of personal property rights. That's a personal opinion. That's not what the constitution says. The constitution of the United States says we're all -- you know, it doesn't say that. It doesn't speak to the equality of America." Actually, PBS reports that Dredd Scott was denied US citizenship because was of African ancestry. The decision was read in March of 1857 by a pro-slavery Chief Justice, Roger B. Taney.

>Sources: John Kerry Rapid Response, FactCheck.org

Debate Note: Training Iraqi Forces

Once again, the president painted a rosy picture of the situation in Iraq by claiming that, by the end of the year, 125,000 trained by the end of December. He couldn’t dig up the memory. And that is a problem.” [MSNBC, 10/5/04]

>Tom Edsall, Washington Post: “I think these two points that were just made about the Iraq and Al-Qaeda connection and the never having met Kerry – ah - Edwards before, are the kind of things that can come back and haunt you after a debate.” [Fox News 10/6/04]

>Melinda Henneberger, Newsweek: “I though did not think that Cheney did the ticket any good tonight. In fact, I think if there is one damaging thing that comes out of it that will be remembered, it will be his strange insistence that he never drew the line between Iraq and 9/11.” [MSNBC, 10/6/04]

>Melinda Henneberger: “It's difficult to say, but I do think that the vice president made the statement that may have done the most lasting damage when he said that I never drew a connection between 9/11 and Iraq. I also thought that when he made his remark to Senator Edwards I’ve never -- you know, I’ve never seen you before, I have never met you before, whatever the exact words were. I thought that came across as a little nasty, and now that that turns out not to have been true too is obviously not a positive for him.” [Fox News 10/6/04]

>Aaron Brown: [CNN showed footage of Cheney and Edwards next to each other at the Prayer Breakfast]

>“A, in fact he had met him and was sitting reasonably close to him and tomorrow there’ll be a fair amount of talk about the fact that while it was a very good zinger, it wasn’t true.” [CNN, 10/06/04]

>Melinda Henneberger, Newsweek: “When Cheney said ‘I’ve never seen you before,’ or whatever his line was, I thought he just seemed nasty and now that it turns out not to even be true." [MSNBC, 10/06/04]

>Chris Matthews: “Why would the Vice President deny something that’s on public record? We’ve got the tape to show it. He has connected 9/11 to Saddam Hussein. He has said it, we have it on tape, and he denied it tonight. That’s not honest is it?” [MSNBC, 10/05/04]

>Mark Hosenball: “Cheney also said a couple things that, to my mind, that weren’t true. He said that this guy Zarqawi, the notorious terrorist, moved from Afghanistan after the U.S. attacked there to Baghdad. That just flatly isn’t true. Zarqawi went from, for many months, first to Iran before going to Iraq, and there’s no clear evidence Saddam’s regime knew that he was there. So, there’s not just one thing that Cheney said that wasn’t true.” [Fox News, 10/6/04]

>Boston Globe: “Edwards was ready with a sharp accusation of his own, that Bush and Cheney had not been leveling with the people on Iraq. While it made for a great photo, I think it should be noted that the GOP recently rolled back taxes for low income families. Grassley (R-Iowa) sided with Democratic leaders in pushing for changes in the child tax credit to ensure that millions of poor families would not see their credits shrink or disappear next year.
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) opposed the move, as did Sens. I agree that it was when the president said "let me finish" for no apparent reason. Neither Kerry or Lehrer had said anything and Bush was only sixty seconds into his answer so none of his warning lights where on. Who was he talking to? Some say he may have had an ear piece, which wouldn't surprise me, but if you asked the president about it, he would probably he tell you he was talking to Jesus.
>Don't believe the news from the White House that everything is dandy in Afghanistan. ABC News reports that the death toll is rising and the nation is seemingly out of control. I thought we had a little thing called diplomacy, maybe you should try it, Bush.

From freewayblogger.com

Billionaires Before Environment

Three days before announcing alleged "protections" for Utah rivers and surrounding scenic areas, the Interior Department opened several thousand acres of to-be preserved canyon to oil and gas drilling. According to reports, such actions could do more damage to the area's environment than coal mining. Dusty Horwitt of the Environmental Working Group told Bush Greenwatch

"The Department of Interior's own records show that there is little or no interest in metals mining on the lands that [Secretary of the Interior] Gale Norton announced she is 'protecting'. But highly destructive oil and gas drilling may still go forward on thousands of acres of these sensitive lands."
The area which could be drilled is home to six endangered and threatened species, among which is the Bald Eagle, and has over one hundred protected archeological sites.
As you can tell, the current policy in the United States is billionaire oil barons before the environment. type='text'>Debate Notes

Tonight's debate may not have rattled any cages, but many things throughout the 90 minute event struck me. One was that George Bush can stand in front of the world and say we and the global community are better off without Saddam Hussein. Of course, there is no argument that Hussein was a horrible man and indeed, should be locked up, tried and executed but this statement was intriguing considering that earlier today, thirty five children and teenagers where killed in Iraq. Another note is that Bush beat the whole "flip-flop" thing into the ground, responding, to several questions claiming that Senator Kerry had taken numerous positions on Iraq. If Bush wants to maintain some credibility throughout these debates, he will have to have something else to say other than "flip-flop."
MORE DEBATE NOTES TO COME!

Blurbs: Bush Bashing, Texas Style

>Even Crawford is turning on the president. Read the Crawford Iconoclasts's Bush bashing editorial!
>Today, the Senate finally got around to the horrible, slanderous mailings that the GOP sent to Bush supporters in Arkansas and West Virginia. As seen in past debates and speeches, Dubya always seems to be vague or repetitive in his speaking, milking such mantras like "we must stay the course." One such incident is when the president was asked about Medicare, he simply told reporters "I think Medicare needs to be reformed" which is the perfect example of his succinct and indirect rhetoric. John Kerry, on the other end of the spectrum, normally goes into detail about his plan as any politician should, after all, if you are going to be president, you should be able to address the issues, not just please the crowd with seemingly patriotic tidbits.

Protest at the Elipse on Saturday

Mourn the dead, heal the wounded and end the war! Click here to get more info on the 1000 coffin protest at the elipse in front of the White House on Saturday. Though he has lain low since his presidency was snatched from beneath him, he has recently been speaking up about George Bush and company. In a recent issue of "The New Yorker", he was quoted as saying what we have all been thinking about President Bush, "He is a bully, and, like all bullies, he's a coward when confronted with a force that he's fearful of." This statement seems to be the running motif of the republican campaign this year.

Karl Rove, the president's chief political advisor and former goon to Satin (I guess theres no difference), has been playing by the simple rule that in order to win, the public must hate John Kerry. The attack ads the Bush campaign have produced are probably the most negative in history, pummeling his senate record and even his stand on education. This, of course, justifies "The New York Times" comments claiming that the relentless smear campaign led by the RNC is "an Un-American way to campaign" and his strategies are "appalling and divisive." However, if you watch some of the campaign ads, you find that their comments are unbelievably hollow and nothing more than shallow rhetoric. But the negativity of the Bush-Cheney campaign is not just limited to television. Recently, the Arkanasas Republican Party sent letters to Bush supporters inside the state. The mailings displayed a photo of the Holy Bible labeled "Banned".

The truth means nothing to the republican party and will, as we can tell by this election, will do anything to get votes. Al Gore certainly had a good point when he called President Bush a "bully" but we all must remember that, inside every bully is a coward.

Today's Blurbs

>I'm not angry at Dan Rather, but I am not to pleased about Andy Rooney's comment on voting.
>As MyDD When campaigning in 2000, the president said he would embargo the nation for it's poor humanitarian record. While the horrible conflict in Chechnya needs to be acknowledged, I think Bush is just playing politics. >Read the AP Report

Sunday Open Thread

What questions do you want to hear at the debate on Thurday?

"Dispicable"

A new Kerry-Edwards TV spot is out today. The interview will air on Hitler's favorite TV show, "The O'Reilly Factor" on Monday and Wednesday. I find it interesting that with all the major combat operations in Iraq going on RIGHT NOW, he would still claim major combat operations over! Maybe if he would read a newspaper, any newspaper, he would find that the statements he made over a year ago before hundreds of US troops were a little inaccurate (especially considering that over 900 troops have died in Iraq since he made the speech).

Debate Questions

The following are questions some of the members of the Kerry-Edwards Yahoo! group want asked during the foreign policy debate on Thursday:
>President Bush and Senator Kerry, How Do You Ask One Of Our Soldiers To Be The Last Soldier To Die In Iraq? How Do You Ask A Person To Be The Last Person To Die For A Mistake?
>Mr. President, you have repeatedly claimed during your recent campaign appearances that 'my opponent now agrees with me that going into Iraq was the right thing to do. The problem, Mr. President, is that we really aren't rebuilding that much, just a sewage line here or there. Oh, and maybe we would have a bit more cash if you hadn't given Halliburton all those contracts without bids.
>ACT AGAINST BUSH: If you live in Springfield or Cedarville (Ohio) or know someone who does, tell them to check out miamivalleyforkerry.com for information on anti-Bush rallies on Sunday and Monday.

More Lies From the Bush Campaign

If you haven't heard about the absurd propaganda the RNC in Arkansas mailed to Bush supporters, click here and scroll down a bit.

John Kerry on the War on Terror

"But the Bush administration would have you believe that when it comes to our allies, it won’t make a difference who is president. It seems to me that the president is afraid of the truth. The truth that this war was started for false reasons. The truth that 1,000 coalition troops have been killed. The truth that even the UK plans to withdraw troops soon. So, instead of taking responsibility and actually fixing our problem in Iraq, the president prefers to stick with his cowboy rhetoric. He smears his opponent, even though Sen. Kerry plans to actually help our troops rather than hide their coffins and deny our struggles. The president just doesn't want to admit that he is failing, and it is for that reason that the nation is in the state it is in.

Is the New TIME Poll Gallup Garbage?

Though I'm not big on polls, considering that many are invalid or have large margins of error, a recent TIME poll reports that Pres. It's true, as this report claims. But who's behind this outrageous tax flip? This fragment of the Washington Post article explains:

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles E.

Don Nickles (R-Okla.) and Trent Lott (R-Miss.). That effectively scuttled changes to existing law.

Yes, Tom DeLay and other prominent republicans are behind this grotesque move. The good news is that while tax cuts for the poor have been rolled back (thanks GOP!) a few tax breaks were approved that actually benefit medium income families.

A Different Story

See the new Kerry-Edwards TV spot: A Different Story

Today's Blurbs

>As we all know, the GOP could never win this election unless they keep scaring Americans with tales of future terrorist attacks.
>America's Homeland Security department is certainly working hard! They recently had Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens deported for possible terrorist links. While jobs are being outsourced and soldiers are being killed for oil, Dubya is sitting back, letting corporate America shower him in cold, hard cash. 400,000 people die every year from smoking related diseases, and he could save a lot of those people if he would regulate chemicals in tobacco products. Then again, those smokers aren't giving him any money and he sure doesn't want to disgruntle his friends at Phillip-Morris. Oh, and lets not forget about the weapons industry! The assault weapons ban recently expired, which has prevented hundreds if not thousands of gun related deaths and all the president had to do was make a phone call for ten more years of machine gun free streets. But I guess he didn't want to make the NRA mad.

Today's Blurbs

>The International Herald Tribune has reported that the Pentagon has denied many absentee voters access to the official oversea voter registration website, a move that could taint the election process.
>This is what the Kerry campaign had to say about new Bush-Cheney ads:
“This week has seen a further deterioration of chaos in Iraq. American servicemen have been killed, two
Americans were brutally beheaded, car bombs continue to explode and, according to Prime Minister Allawi’s
own account, thousands of terrorists continue to pour into Iraq. A shrug of the shoulder from the President at the U.N., and an advertisement that takes a
lighthearted approach to the war in Iraq.
